Christmas Party Fun: Let the Reading Begin!

Well, it's over: the mimosas have been drunk, the lasagna was devoured, and all the wrapped books were unveiled.

As usual, the Christmas book exchange our book club's most popular meeting of the year. We had 15 of 16 members come ("V" was away in Arizona...Not sure if that's a good enough reason to miss it!) It started at 10:30 am and only wrapped up around 2 pm, because some of us had to pick up the kids from school. Without this interruption, we might still be gabbing and munching!

One highlight for me was our visitor "I" from Denmark. Last year, one of our spunkiest members relocated to Denmark (her motherland), and her joyful presence has been missed ever since. So in preparation for our book exchange, I linked her up on Skype, and we were able to include her via video conference into the chat. It was great to see her, and I hope that we can include her in our meetings more often.

We talked about Catcher in the Rye--Some loved it, some (ok, me) didn't like it much at all. It was a good discussion. I still don't understand why it's seen as one of the greatest novels ever. (PLEASE, if anyone wants to try to explain this to me, I would love to see your comments...And I will publish them, so long as you don't call me obtuse.) Nuf said.

The book exchange was the days highlight, we everyone yelling and joking about steeling books from each other. There was only one duplicate book: The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. Both copies flew around the room, with one of our members almost getting into a cat fight on my couch! (You know who you are!!!)

I received Lucky by Alice Sebold, the author most recognized for her other popular title The Lovely Bones. I have read neither, so I will read Lucky next, and let you know what I think. BTW, I visited our local Thrift Shop yesterday, and found a copy of The Lovely Bones for 50 cents...Gotta Love Charity Shop Finds!

I was also lent The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt, and can't wait to read this year's winner of the Governor General's Literary Award. It sounds like a great read, and will return it to "F" once it's done. Thanks for sharing!

Books have brought a great groups of women from my community together. Our members are diverse, with different interests and backgrounds, but we all share a common love of books. We are blessed in so many ways. Merry Christmas and hurry up with the Christmas shopping...Your books are waiting for you!

  1. I was so happy to be a part of the Christmas Party atmosphere via Skype. So thoughtful of you Claire. It was loud and fun, and if only my connection had been better, it would have been absolutely perfect. A repetition would be most welcome :)

I really miss the book club and all ofyou fun girls - one of the highlights of the month during my time in Canada.

    Love,
    Ilse
